Health Advisory: Vibrio vulnificus in Gulf Waters

Vibrio vulnificus is a naturally occurring bacterium found in warm, brackish coastal waters like the Mississippi Gulf Coast. It can enter the body through open cuts or scrapes and, in rare cases, cause severe infection. Vibrio vulnificus is sometimes referred to as a “flesh-eating bacteria.” According to the CDC, about 1 in 5 people with serious V. vulnificus infection may die, sometimes within 1–2 days of becoming ill.

What to Know

  • Risk is higher during warm months and in brackish water (where fresh and salt water mix).
  • Local context: Recent news reports have highlighted severe wound infections on the Coast, including a Bay St. Louis case after a scrape with a boat trailer.

How to Reduce Your Risk (MSDH)

  • Avoid water exposure if you have an open wound (cuts, scrapes, recent piercings or surgery). If unavoidable, cover with a waterproof bandage.
  • Clean any wound that has contacted coastal water with soap and water.
  • Seek medical care promptly for rapidly worsening redness, swelling, pain, fever, or blisters after water exposure—tell your provider you were in coastal water.
